Expect a spread of colours, usually white, cream, yellow, lilac and purple, with several flowers from each corm and bright orange stigmas inside. They flower in February and March, growing to around 8 to 10cm tall above narrow leaves with a silver central stripe. Species crocuses naturalise freely, so they spread gently into drifts in grass, under deciduous trees, in rock gardens, at the front of borders and in pots. The early flowers are an important source of nectar and pollen for bees.
