Unlike spring crocuses, it flowers in autumn, usually October, producing lilac-purple goblet-shaped blooms with darker veining, held above narrow green leaves that stay through winter and die back in late spring. It grows to around 10 to 15cm tall. Each flower gives three red stigmas, so a decent harvest needs a good number of corms. It needs a hot, sunny, sharply drained spot, ideally one that bakes dry in summer.
