  • Why we like this plant

Looking for a clematis that’s small in size but big on flower power? 'Piilu' is just the ticket. Its charming double blooms in spring followed by single flowers in late summer mean you get twice the display from one plant. It’s ideal for pots on a sunny terrace or a compact space that needs a colour lift. And best of all, it keeps going long after many other climbers have stopped.

  • About this plant

Clematis 'Piilu' is a compact, deciduous climber celebrated for its delightful two-tone flowers. Early blooms are often double, with layers of mauve-pink petals and a contrasting deeper pink central bar, while later flowers tend to be single. Flowering profusely from late spring into early autumn, this variety is perfect for patios, small gardens, or containers. Its manageable size and repeat performance make it a top choice for colourful, long-lasting display.

Planting guide

Plant the crown 5–8cm below soil level to help prevent clematis wilt. Use a container or border spot with good drainage and provide a support such as a trellis. Keep the base shaded with mulch or low-growing plants.

Care tips

Feed in spring and again after the first flush of flowers with a balanced fertiliser. Water regularly in dry spells and prune lightly to maintain shape and repeat blooming.

Winter care

Fully hardy in the UK. Prune in late winter or early spring (Group 2) to just above healthy buds. Mulch around the base to protect roots and suppress weeds.
