Its rich, dark foliage is striking enough on its own—and when the soft violet blooms rise above in spring, the effect is simply enchanting. Easy-going and compact, it works beautifully in borders, wildlife gardens, or shady corners.

  • About this plant

Polemonium 'Bressingham Purple', also known as Jacob’s Ladder, is a clump-forming perennial with stunning purple-bronze foliage and delicate violet-blue flowers. Planting guide

Plant in spring or autumn in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid letting soil dry out completely. Works well in groups or as underplanting for taller shrubs.

Care tips

Deadhead to encourage a second flush of blooms. Cut back hard after flowering to tidy foliage. Mulch annually and water in dry spells.

Winter care

Cut back after flowering and mulch in late autumn. In colder areas, a winter mulch will help protect the crown. Leaves may die back in winter and regrow in spring.
