  • Why we like this plant

If you’ve ever struggled to pick between blackberries and raspberries, ‘Medana’ gives you the best of both — and then some. These berries are plump, flavour-packed, and come in serious quantity. With fewer thorns than other varieties and sweeter fruit, it’s a winner for families, foodies, and anyone who loves growing their own summer treats.

  • About this plant

‘Medana’ is a cultivated tayberry variety, developed for its large, sweet fruits and improved yield over earlier types. This hybrid of blackberry and raspberry produces long, cone-shaped berries with a rich, tangy flavour that’s perfect for fresh eating, baking, or preserves. Less tart than traditional tayberries, ‘Medana’ offers a better eating experience straight from the plant. Its vigorous, trailing canes benefit from support, making it well-suited to training along fences or trellises.

Planting guide

Plant in early spring or autumn in fertile, well-drained soil. Provide support for the canes — a trellis or horizontal wires are ideal. Space plants at least 1.5m apart and mulch well after planting.

Care tips

Feed in spring with a high-potash fertiliser. Prune out old canes after fruiting and tie in new ones. Keep well-watered in dry weather, especially when fruiting.

Winter care

Cut back fruited canes to the base after harvest. Tie in new canes for next year’s fruit. Apply a thick mulch of compost or manure to enrich the soil and protect roots.
