Why we like this plant
This variety offers season-long interest thanks to its bold striped foliage, even before the flowers appear. It is particularly valuable in moisture-retentive borders or beside water, where it thrives and provides height and structure. The combination of refined foliage and showy blooms makes it a standout choice for adding drama without heaviness.

About this plant
An elegant Japanese iris grown as much for its striking foliage as its flowers. Slender, upright leaves are boldly striped with creamy white and green, creating vertical interest from spring onwards. In early to midsummer, large violet-purple blooms with intricate markings rise above the foliage, delivering a refined and dramatic display.

Planting guide
Plant in spring into fertile, humus-rich soil that retains moisture but drains reasonably well in winter. Position in full sun for the best flowering. Set the crown just below soil level and water thoroughly after planting. Keep well watered through the growing season.
Care tips
Keep soil consistently moist during spring and summer. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage strong growth and flowering. Divide clumps every few years after flowering to maintain vigour.
Winter care
Cut back foliage to just above ground level in late autumn once it has died down. Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould to protect the crown and retain moisture. In colder areas, ensure the roots do not sit in waterlogged soil over winter.
