Why we like this plant
Tulip saxatilis 'Lilac Wonder' is cherished for its simple beauty and reliability. A species tulip native to the Aegean, it performs wonderfully in well-drained soils, returning year after year with little effort. Its low, spreading habit makes it perfect for naturalising beneath deciduous trees or in gravel gardens, where its open blooms gleam in the morning sun. The delicate colouring and golden centre pair beautifully with primroses, anemones, and other early bloomers, creating a gentle tapestry of spring delight.
Planting guide
Plant in autumn, 8 to 10 cm deep and 6 to 8 cm apart, in gritty, well-drained soil and full sun or dappled shade.
Care tips
Leave flowers to fade naturally and foliage to die back undisturbed. In free-draining soil and sunny positions, this tulip will happily naturalise, requiring little maintenance beyond the occasional lift and divide after several years.
