Planting guide

Plant in autumn or spring in a sunny to partially shaded spot. Use loamy, well-drained soil and avoid shallow chalk. If growing in a pot, choose a large container with good drainage and enrich with organic matter. Water regularly while the plant establishes.

Care tips

Keep soil evenly moist, particularly during hot spells. Apply mulch each spring to conserve moisture and feed with a balanced fertiliser annually. Little pruning is needed beyond shaping.

Winter care

Protect roots with a thick mulch layer. If grown in a container, move to a sheltered spot or insulate the pot in prolonged cold spells. Minimal pruning required in winter beyond removing damaged or crossing branches.
