    • Why we like this plant

Sarcococca ‘Winter Gem’ is perfect for gardeners wanting year-round interest in shady areas. Its compact size, lush foliage, and enchanting winter scent make it a gem for patios, borders, and foundation planting.

    • About this plant

Winter Gem is a modern, compact cultivar of Sarcococca hookeriana, bred for a neat habit and superb garden performance. Its narrow, pointed, glossy green leaves provide year-round structure, while clusters of highly fragrant, creamy-white flowers emerge in winter, often followed by small, shiny black berries. It’s an excellent choice for small gardens, shady courtyards, and winter container displays. As with other sarcococcas, it tolerates dry shade once established and is remarkably low maintenance.

    Care tips

Requires little pruning – simply clip lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Apply mulch in spring and feed with a general-purpose fertiliser to encourage lush growth. Water regularly in dry spells during establishment.

    Winter care

Very hardy in UK conditions and doesn’t require winter protection. The evergreen foliage remains attractive even in cold months, and flowering occurs reliably from midwinter into early spring.
