About this plant
A fountain of lime-and-cream, all year round
-
Description
Cordyline australis 'Lime Passion' is a striking, palm-like evergreen grown for its bold, arching sword-shaped leaves, brightly striped in lime-green and creamy yellow. Forming a fountain of vivid, upright foliage on a single stem, it brings instant architectural structure and an exotic, tropical feel to borders, patios and containers, and holds its colour all year round. Mature plants may produce large panicles of small, sweetly scented cream flowers in summer. Its cheerful, contemporary look works as well in a modern courtyard as in a coastal or exotic scheme.

Planting guide
Plant in spring or early summer in free-draining soil. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot, ideally with shelter from cold winds. Water well during dry spells and use a slow-release fertiliser in spring.
Care tips
Water regularly through the first growing season to establish, after which it is fairly drought-tolerant, needing only deep, occasional watering in dry spells. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring and a liquid feed in midsummer for lush colour. Simply pull or cut away any dead or tatty lower leaves at the base as they appear. If it grows too tall or leggy, the main stem can be cut in spring to encourage fresh shoots from the base.
Winter care
In colder areas, protect the crown and roots with fleece or mulch. Ideal for container planting so it can be moved to shelter during severe frost. Ensure free-draining soil to prevent rot.
