Clematis might look fancy, but they’re surprisingly fuss-free once you know their vibe. They like their roots cool and shaded, but their heads in the sun. Think of it as the plant version of sunbathing with a bucket hat. A good mulch or some low-growing companion plants will keep the roots happy, while a sunny or lightly shaded spot helps those blooms pop.

Give them something to climb, Trellis, obelisk, railing, even a lamppost and they’ll take it from there. Water regularly in dry spells, especially in their first year, and feed with a high-potash fertiliser when buds start to show. Pruning depends on the variety (some like a hard cutback, others just a light tidy).
