About this plant

Soft yellow blooms with a lime-green glow

  • Description

Hemerocallis 'Green Flutter' is a charming, clump-forming herbaceous perennial producing soft yellow flowers with a distinctive lime-green throat, each bloom opening for a single day before being replaced by another from the same prolific stems through the height of summer. The flowers are held above neat, arching, grass-like foliage that forms an attractive mound even when the plant is not in bloom. A reliable and undemanding daylily, it suits the middle of a sunny or lightly shaded border, and its continuous succession of fresh blooms over many weeks makes it a valuable and cheerful presence in the summer garden. It is also a good pollinator plant, attracting bees throughout its flowering period.
  • Why we like it

There is something genuinely cheering about a daylily in full flow, with fresh flowers opening every morning through the warmest weeks of summer. 'Green Flutter' brings a gentle, soft yellow to the display, lifted by that lime-green throat that gives the flower a little extra glow and sets it apart from plainer yellow daylilies. It asks for very little: plant it in reasonable soil, give it some sun, and it will get on with producing flowers in generous succession for weeks on end, while the foliage looks tidy and attractive even when nothing is in bloom.

Planting guide

Hemerocallis 'Green Flutter' tolerates a wide range of soils, including moderately heavy clay, provided drainage is reasonable and the position is not permanently waterlogged. It performs best in full sun but will flower well in partial shade, where the flowers may also last a little longer in the cooler conditions. Plant the crown at or just below soil level, spacing plants around 55–60 cm apart to allow for the mature spread. Incorporate garden compost at planting on poorer soils to improve fertility and moisture retention. It establishes readily and needs little aftercare once settled, though regular watering in the first growing season will help the clump establish more quickly.

Care tips

Hemerocallis 'Green Flutter' is one of the easiest perennials to maintain. Remove individual spent flowers daily if you wish to keep the display looking immaculate, though this is entirely optional as the spent blooms are not especially conspicuous among the fresh ones opening each day. Once the entire flowering stem has finished, it can be cut back to the base of the clump. Cut back the foliage to ground level in late autumn once it has died down naturally. No regular feeding is needed on reasonably fertile soils; a light application of balanced fertiliser in spring supports good flowering on poorer ground. Divide congested clumps every four to five years in spring or just after flowering to maintain vigour.

Winter care

Hemerocallis 'Green Flutter' is fully hardy and requires no winter protection anywhere in the UK. The foliage dies back naturally in autumn; cut back the dying leaves to ground level once they have turned brown and collapsed, typically in late autumn. Fresh foliage will emerge reliably the following spring from the dormant crown. No mulching or protection is necessary in normal UK conditions, though a light mulch of garden compost in autumn helps maintain soil structure and fertility. Divide congested clumps every four to five years in spring or immediately after flowering to maintain vigour and flowering performance.
