    Kniphofia 'Lemon Popsicle' is a compact red hot poker with clear lemon-yellow flower spikes held above neat clumps of narrow, grassy foliage. Bred to stay short and tidy, it flowers in succession from early summer right through to autumn, far longer than older poker varieties. Bees and butterflies work the tubular flowers constantly, and the spikes make striking, unusual cut flowers.

Planting guide

Plant in full sun in free-draining soil, working grit into heavy ground, as pokers hate sitting wet in winter. Space plants around 40cm apart and water well while they establish. A sheltered spot protects the flower spikes from strong wind.

Care tips

Snip out spent flower spikes at the base to keep new ones coming. Tidy the foliage in spring rather than autumn. Divide congested clumps every three to five years in spring to maintain flowering.

Winter care

Hardy in most of the UK. Leave the foliage in place over winter to protect the crown, then tidy the clump in spring, removing dead leaves. In cold gardens or on heavy soil, a dry mulch over the crown gives useful extra protection. Good winter drainage matters more than cold.
