  • Why we like this plant

Sarcococca confusa is the perfect choice for bringing life, scent, and greenery to those tricky, shady corners. Its winter flowering habit and easy-care nature make it a must-have for low-light gardens.

  • About this plant

Sarcococca confusa is a slow-growing, evergreen shrub ideal for bringing scent and structure to shaded areas of the garden. In mid to late winter, it produces small, creamy-white flowers that may appear modest but release a powerful, sweet fragrance that carries on the air. These are followed by glossy black berries that persist into spring. Its shiny, deep green leaves and compact, mound-forming habit make it excellent for foundation planting, winter containers, or shaded borders. It’s also well-suited to use as a low hedge.

Planting guide

Plant in partial or full shade in well-drained, humus-rich soil. It thrives in sheltered positions and can tolerate dry shade once established. Space plants around 60cm apart if planting as a hedge.

Care tips

Minimal pruning is needed – simply trim after flowering to shape if desired. Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth.

Winter care

Very hardy and reliable through UK winters. Its evergreen foliage remains attractive year-round, and the winter flowers offer much-needed seasonal interest without any special protection.
