About this plant

Vivid red blooms with golden eyes, all summer

  • Description

Achillea millefolium 'Milly Rock Red' is a compact, clump-forming yarrow grown for its flattened heads of small red flowers, each with a bright yellow eye. The blooms appear through summer and autumn and soften towards rosy pink as they age, held on short, upright stems above finely cut, aromatic grey-green foliage. Its low, tidy habit suits the front of a sunny border or a container, and the nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for bees and butterflies.

  • Why we like it

'Milly Rock Red' brings a bold, saturated red to the front of the border on a plant that stays low and tidy, without the flop of taller yarrows. The flat flowerheads, lit by bright yellow eyes, make ideal landing pads for bees and butterflies, and they soften to rosy pink as they age for a naturally varied display. Its compact habit suits pots, edging and gravel gardens just as well as a mixed border.

Planting & care

Help it thrive

Planting guide

Plant in spring or autumn into well-drained soil in full sun. Achillea dislike heavy, wet ground, so improve drainage on clay soils with grit before planting. Water well while establishing, then only during dry spells. Space plants around 30cm apart for good air circulation.

Care tips

Water during dry spells in the first growing season, after which the plant is drought-tolerant. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong flowering and keep the plant compact. Lift and divide clumps every few years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour.
