About this plant

Long-flowering lavender-blue daisies

  • Description

Aster 'Monch' is a reliable, long-flowering perennial with a profusion of lavender-blue, daisy-like flowers with golden centres, held on branching stems above narrow green foliage. It flowers over an exceptionally long season from mid summer well into autumn, making it one of the most valuable late-season perennials for pollinators. It is well suited to sunny borders and looks good grown alongside ornamental grasses.
  • Why we like it

It's one of the most dependable asters you can grow, flowering for months on end when many other perennials are winding down. The better mildew resistance compared with older Michaelmas daisies means it stays looking good without the mildew problems that put a lot of gardeners off asters.

Plant in spring or autumn. Once established, flowering begins in midsummer and continues right through to the first hard frosts.

Planting & care

Help it thrive

Planting guide

Plant in a sunny spot in reasonably fertile, well-drained soil, working in some well-rotted organic matter if the soil is poor. Good air circulation around plants helps keep foliage healthy. Water well after planting until established.

Care tips

Water during dry spells in the first growing season while plants establish; once settled, they are reasonably drought tolerant. Deadheading is not essential but tidying spent flowers can prolong the display slightly. Divide congested clumps every few years in spring to maintain vigour and flowering.

Winter care

Fully hardy and needs no winter protection. Cut back flowered stems to ground level in autumn once flowering has finished, or leave standing over winter for structure and to shelter overwintering insects, then clear away in early spring before new growth begins.
