About this plant

The hardy geranium that simply will not stop

  • Description

Geranium 'Rozanne' is a vigorous, mound-forming hardy geranium producing an exceptionally long succession of large, saucer-shaped flowers in a rich violet-blue with a white centre and delicate darker veining. It begins flowering in early summer and continues with remarkable persistence until the first autumn frosts, far outlasting most other hardy geraniums. The foliage is deeply divided and attractive in its own right, taking on warm russet and orange tints in autumn before dying back. It is an outstanding pollinator plant and one of the most celebrated and widely planted hardy geraniums in cultivation.
  • Why we like it

'Rozanne' has won more awards and appeared in more gardens than almost any other hardy perennial of the past thirty years, and the reason is straightforward: it flowers for an astonishing length of time without requiring anything much in return. From June until October or beyond, those large violet-blue flowers keep appearing in an unbroken succession that most other plants cannot match. It weaves pleasingly between its neighbours, covers the ground effectively, and then colours up in autumn before quietly dying back. It is, by any measure, one of the great border plants.

Flowering

Plant in spring or early autumn for best establishment. Flowering begins in June and continues reliably until the first hard frosts in October or November. Cutting back hard in midsummer if flowering slows can refresh the plant and encourage a further flush of growth and bloom.

Planting & care

Help it thrive

Planting guide

Geranium 'Rozanne' is tolerant of a wide range of soils and aspects, making it one of the most straightforward perennials to establish. Plant in spring or early autumn, setting the crown at soil level and spacing plants around 60–75 cm apart to allow for the generous spread. It performs well in sun or partial shade, though flowering is most prolific in a position that receives at least a few hours of direct sun each day. On very heavy, waterlogged soils, incorporate grit and compost to improve drainage before planting. It also grows well in large containers filled with a good loam-based compost, though container plants will need more regular watering than those in the ground.

Care tips

Geranium 'Rozanne' is one of the least demanding border perennials. Once established it needs little attention beyond an annual cut-back. If the plant begins to look tired or flowering slows during a hot spell in midsummer, cut the whole plant back to within a few centimetres of the ground; it will regenerate quickly and produce a fresh flush of flowers within a few weeks. In late autumn or early spring, cut all the stems back to ground level. No regular feeding is required on reasonably fertile soils; an occasional top-dressing of garden compost in spring is sufficient. Avoid disturbing the rootstock unnecessarily, as established clumps flower more freely when left in place.

Winter care

Geranium 'Rozanne' is fully hardy and requires no winter protection anywhere in the UK. The plant dies back to a woody rootstock after the first frosts. Cut back all the old stems and foliage to ground level in late autumn or early spring, whichever is more convenient. In mild winters some foliage may persist at the base; remove any that looks tatty in early spring as new growth begins to emerge. No division is necessary unless you wish to propagate, as established plants perform better when left undisturbed.
