About this plant

Blackberry-purple leaves with a silver shimmer

  • Description

Heuchera 'Blackberry Jam' is a compact evergreen perennial grown for its richly coloured foliage in deep maroon and blackberry-purple, patterned with ebony veining and overlaid with a shimmering silver sheen. The deeply lobed leaves form a neat, rounded mound that holds its colour through the year, and in summer slender, wiry dark stems carry airy sprays of small creamy-white flowers. Compact and easy to grow, it is ideal for the front of a border, as ground cover, or for adding rich colour to a container all year round.

  • Why we like it

'Blackberry Jam' brings deep, jewel-like colour to the garden without relying on flowers. Its maroon and blackberry leaves, veined in ebony and washed with silver, look good every day of the year and make a superb foil for brighter perennials or a rich splash in a winter container. Compact, evergreen and easy, it is happy in sun or light shade and asks for very little in return.

Planting & care

Help it thrive

Planting guide

Plant in spring or autumn into fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Avoid both dry ground and heavy, waterlogged soil, improving clay or sand with plenty of compost before planting. In full sun, make sure the soil stays reliably moist, or choose a spot with some afternoon shade for the best colour. Set plants with the crown level with the soil surface and space around 35cm apart.

Care tips

Keep the soil evenly moist, as heucheras dislike both drought and waterlogging, and the foliage can scorch in full sun if it dries out. Remove faded flower stems after blooming to keep the focus on the leaves. Divide congested clumps every three to four years in spring or autumn, and replant any that have lifted out of the soil a little deeper to keep them healthy.
