Description
Kniphofia uvaria 'Grandiflora' is a bold, architectural perennial with tall, upright flower spikes in shades of orange and yellow, held above clumps of narrow, strap-like foliage. It flowers from summer into autumn and is a valuable source of nectar for bees and, in some gardens, visiting hummingbird-like insects such as hoverflies. Its striking form makes it a real focal point in a sunny border. -

Planting guide
Plant in full sun in free-draining soil, working in grit if the soil is heavy, as good drainage is important, particularly over winter. Choose a sheltered spot in colder gardens to protect the crown from the worst of the winter wet. Water well after planting until established.
Care tips
Water regularly during the first growing season while plants establish; once settled, they tolerate short dry spells well. In autumn, in colder gardens, gather the foliage up and tie it loosely over the crown to protect it from winter wet and frost. Remove old flower spikes once flowering has finished.
Winter care
Fully hardy in most parts of the UK, though in colder areas or on heavy, wet soils, tying the foliage into a loose knot over the crown in autumn helps shed excess winter wet and protect against frost. Cut back old flower spikes once flowering has finished.
