About this plant

A Mediterranean cocktail for the patio

  • Description

Lantana Calippo 'Orange Magenta' is a compact patio plant carrying domed clusters of small flowers in a vivid mix of magenta, orange, peach and yellow, with the colours shifting as each bloom ages. The neat, bushy plants have dark green aromatic foliage and flower non-stop from early summer to early autumn. Butterflies love it, and it thrives in hot, sunny spots where other bedding starts to flag.

  • Why we like it

The colour mix in each flowerhead is genuinely striking, and in the UK climate the shades come out even more intense than in warmer countries. It shrugs off heat and dry spells that finish off most summer bedding, making it a smart choice for south-facing patios and anyone who forgets to water.

Planting & care

Help it thrive

Planting guide

Plant out after the last frost in the sunniest spot you have, in free-draining soil or peat-free multipurpose compost with added grit. It performs best in warmth, so a south-facing patio or wall is ideal. Wear gloves when handling, and note the berries are harmful if eaten.

Care tips

Deadhead faded flowerheads to keep new ones coming and pinch back any straggly shoots to keep plants bushy. Feed container plants fortnightly with a high potash liquid feed through summer.

Winter care

Not frost hardy. Treat as summer bedding, or bring container plants into a frost-free greenhouse, conservatory or bright porch before the first frosts. Keep barely moist over winter and cut back in early spring before moving back outside once frosts have passed.
