    Scabiosa 'Pink Mist' is a compact pincushion flower producing masses of lilac-pink blooms with paler, domed centres on wiry stems above a low mound of ferny grey-green foliage. It is one of the longest flowering perennials you can grow, in bloom from early summer until well into autumn if deadheaded. Bees and butterflies visit constantly, and the stems are lovely in small vases.

Planting guide

Plant in full sun in any well-drained soil, including chalk, spacing plants around 35cm apart. On heavy ground, add plenty of coarse grit before planting. Water in well and keep watered through the first summer.

Care tips

Deadhead regularly, as this is the single biggest factor in keeping it flowering for months. Cut back spent stems in autumn and divide clumps every three years or so in spring to keep them vigorous.

Winter care

Fully hardy. Cut back the spent flower stems in autumn and tidy the foliage, but avoid heavy winter wet, which scabious dislike far more than cold. On heavy soil, work in grit at planting time and mulch lightly with grit rather than compost around the crown.
