Planting guide

Plant in spring or autumn in fertile, well-drained soil with the crown set just below soil level. Provide strong support such as wires or mesh, and allow space to ramble. Shade the base and water well in the first growing season.

Care tips

Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Water regularly during dry spells until well established. Tidy up spent flowers or seedheads if desired, but many gardeners leave them for seasonal interest.

Winter care

Prune hard in late winter or early spring (Group 3). Cut back all stems to a strong pair of buds about 20–30cm from the ground. Mulch to protect roots.
